Women Candidates Represent for the Democratic Party
The Democratic Party knows that women are one of the most consistent and important resources nationwide. We strongly support female candidates and recognize the ever changing and significant role of women in politics. Below we have highlighted just a few of the many women who are representing the Democratic Party out on the campaign trail this election cycle.
U.S. Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones (OH-11), seeking re-election: Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones is the first African-American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives from Ohio. In early 2005 on the House floor, Rep. Jones resolutely stood up for voting rights everywhere by objecting to the certification of the 2004 U.S. presidential election results for Ohio. A graduate of Cleveland public schools, Rep. Jones has an bachelor's degree in social work, as well as a law degree.
Jill Martinez, US Representative Candidate (CA-24): Martinez has been a community leader in central California for years. She holds a Masters of Divinity degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Martinez has served as both a city Civil Service Commissioner and a police chaplain in her hometown of Stockton, CA. She taught professional ethics for the MBA program at California State University Stanislaus. Notably, she is also the former co-host of the bilingual television program, "La Voz de la Raza."
U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow seeking re-election: Senator Debbie Stabenow made history in 2000, when she defeated incumbent Republican Spencer Abraham to become Michigan's first woman Senator. At that time, she was also the first woman in U.S. history to defeat a sitting Senator. Debbie Stabenow has risen quickly into a leadership role, being elected the third ranking Democrat in the Senate by her colleagues after just four years.
Barbara Sykes running for Ohio State Auditor: With a long history of fighting for the rights of Ohioans, she currently serves as the President of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus, is the highest ranking Democrat on the Ways & Means Committee, and a member of the State Commission on Minority Health. Sykes was the first African American woman to serve on the Akron City Council, and she will bring over 25 years of experience to the office of State Auditor.
